Nothing like The Bus invasion to feed my addiction and end camping season……………………………… that’s always a sad time of the year for me. I love camping, the beach, the sun, traveling in my bus and living my best life. Winter is depressing.
The bus invasion is put on by the Indiana Bus Club. Normally it’s just Voltswagon buses but this year they opened it up to skoolies. There were even a few VW bugs in the mix! I have 2 skoolies and a VW bus.
My great friends Doug, aka Pancake, and Julie went with me. We took two buses, Lil Gypsy and the VW bus. We got the same campsite that Doug and Julie had at the Dead fast in July 2021. These friends took excellent care of me; they did it all. I had my chemo port put in the day we headed out to camp. Doug drove Lil Gypsy and Julie drove the VW bus; she did a great job even though she had never driven one and it’s probably been awhile since she’s driven something without power steering. The bus ran like a champ. I was so excited. This was the farthest trip since getting it rebuit. Thank you Colby and Dillon at Buggy Works!
When I first found out about this event, I was worried that my VW bus was so much newer than all the buses that would be there. I’d love to have an old split window or actually any bus older than the early 70’s but they cost more than my first house.
After arriving at the campground, I noticed that there were far more buses the same square body style as mine and three were the exact same color. After talking to several people over the weekend, I found out that this square body style is making a come back. That’s pretty exciting.
Doug is an awesome camp fire chef; he’s the king of the cast iron skillet. He makes a mean fried peanut butter and jelly. His breakfast burritos are great but honestly everything he cooks is excellent. He does all of the cooking and all of the drinking (just kidding pancake) hence, where the nickname pancake came from but that’s a whole other story from another festival. LOL
Julie thinks of everything, she comes prepared. I normally do too but all my stuff is in the big bus. She even brought 2 heaters for us to put in the buses at night. We stayed toasty warm. I love sleeping when it’s cooler though; I pile about 4-5 quilts on me. When I’m home, I put a heating pad around my feet and it’s so warm.
My friend, Sheila, made a cake for me to contribute to the pitch in. It was a HUGE hit! It was delicious. I can guarantee I will be bringing a cool cake every year from now on. From everyone’s reaction, I think they’d be highly disappointed if this was the last time I brought one.
Did I tell you I love cake? LOL Well, I do and there was not one piece left over for me to take home. 🙁
I met so many people who all come together thru the love of buses. I made new friends and got to spend the weekend with some amazing old friends.
These people are the real deal. No judgment, they all help each other and it’s as if they’ve known you your entire life. If you forgot to bring something from an electrical plug to coffee to a hotdog stick to gas for your generator, I can guarantee someone will have extra and be willing to loan or give.
There were two bands for the weekend, playing Friday and Saturday night. They were very good. Thye played the great music from the 70’s……good dance music. It brought back memories
RJ and some of his bluegrass friends showed up to play also. They were a big hit. Totally different from the bands but everyone seemed to love the music. They’re fun to watch and people love all the different instruments.
There’s nothing quite like sitting around a campfire on a chilly night with good people and listening to great music. I think I could spend every weekend at some campground. What a life!
I was definitely in my happy place……………..camping, music, good friends, food and buses……….. it doesn’t get much better than that. I love buses……………all buses. I fell in love at least a dozen times over the weekend. I can’t even say which is my favorite. If money were no object, I’d have a fleet.
